MINNEAPOLIS – Logan Cooley, who had an exceptional season with the Golden Gophers hockey team in 2022-23, made his National Hockey League debut on Friday night with the Arizona Coyotes. Cooley is the 124th former Minnesota men’s hockey player to play in the NHL, making the Gophers the college hockey program with the most NHL players in history.
Cooley, who was named to the AHCA/CCM Hockey All-American West First Team in his only year with the Maroon and Gold, was the No. 3 overall pick in the 2022 NHL Entry Draft. He played his first NHL game wearing a Coyotes jersey against the New Jersey Devils at the Prudential Center. Cooley had two assists and played for 19:02 minutes, earning his first professional point in the second period.
Last season, Cooley was a finalist for the Hobey Baker Hat Trick and led the Gophers with 60 points, including 22 goals and 38 assists. He was also named USA Hockey’s Jim Johannson College Player of the Year. Cooley, who is from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, scored at least one point in 32 of the 39 games he played and led the Gophers with 12 points in six postseason games, including eight points in four NCAA Tournament games.
