SAN DIEGO, CA – The University of Minnesota tennis team had a successful final day at the San Diego State (SDSU) Fall Classic. The Golden Gophers finished with a 1-1 record in doubles and a 4-2 record in singles on Sunday. After three days of competition, they ended with a 5-3 overall record in doubles and a 13-5 overall record in singles. Each of the team’s draws had finalists, with every Gopher achieving a winning record in singles play. Freshman Emma Belluomini stood out by going undefeated in both singles and doubles (with partner Anali Kocevar) throughout the weekend.
Head coach Lois Arterberry expressed her satisfaction with the team’s performance, stating, “The Gophers raised their level of play this weekend. I saw our athletes fighting until the last ball. We played seven three-set matches and were close to winning six of them. This demonstrates our ability to compete until the end. Overall, we witnessed tremendous growth in both singles and doubles. As we return to Minnesota, Coach Steve, Coach Ana, and I are ready to work hard to prepare the players for the ITA Regional Tournament.”
The Gophers will now prepare for the ITA Central Regional Tournament in Lawrence, Kansas from October 12-16. This will be their third tournament of the 2023 fall season.
