The game remained scoreless throughout the first period, with both teams having limited scoring opportunities. The Gophers had eight shots on goal in the first period, while the Huskies had four.
During the second period, freshman Ava Lindsay scored her second goal of her collegiate career, assisted by Emily Zumwinkle and Emma Kreisz. This goal opened the scoring for the evening. With just 47 seconds left in the game, graduate Taylor Stewart scored an empty-net goal, extending the Gophers’ lead to two. Shortly after, St. Cloud State managed to score a goal, resulting in a final score of 2-1.
Junior Skylar Vetter put on another impressive performance in the net, making 14 saves and earning her third win of the season.
Quotable
“Great win here tonight, we just grinded it out,” said head coach Brad Frost. “We knew it was going to be tough, because St. Cloud is a great opponent. We were very structured and had some great goaltending as well, really proud of Skylar [Vetter], she was amazing. I thought in particular our team had really picked it up in the second and third periods and started to control play.”
After scoring her second career goal, Lindsay mentioned that the experienced defense of the team acts as a stabilizing force, making life easier for forwards like her.
Regarding her goal, Lindsay stated that it was a result of the team executing their game plan in the second and third periods.
“It was a great shot by Emily Zumwinkle, she managed to get the shot through, which was something we emphasized going into the second period,” Lindsay said. “It was a great presence in front of the net by Peyton Hemp, and I was able to time it correctly.”
